Hey, I'm back with a food review this time. I have finally tried the Plain Vanilla Cupcakes a few days back. And crazy enough, I bought Twelve Cupcakes right after too.
So, I have been dying to try the Plain Vanilla Cupcakes for months now. It is highly raved about and is always being compared to Twelve Cupcakes.
Located at Holland Village on top of a Mexican restaurant, the bakery is really difficult to find. As it has to share the second level with a spa, the sign for the bakery is hard to spot, with the sun glaring at your face, it's almost impossible to look up and see its sign on the windows too. It is also tiny store where there is only the counter for the cupcakes, a shelf with products and a bench for you to sit with no table.
Packaging:
Very pretty and good quality. Like most cupcake box, it had those holders inside to stabilize the cupcakes. The box itself is of high quality, made with hard cardboard. The twine tie/ribbon gives it a classic and simplistic look which I love.
The Cupcakes:
At first sight, they look really good. Simple and beautiful. However, I'm sad to say, I was really disappointed with the taste.
Salted Caramel and Earl Grey Lavender. Cupcakes were really very very sweet. I gave the earl grey one to my mum and after one bite, she scooped the rest of the icing (yes icing not cream) away. I took some of the icing and tried. It was diabetic worthy. Same for the salted caramel which i finished, it was so sweet i found myself drinking water non-stop to neutralize the taste. It also unlike your usual salted caramel dessert with the taste of icing overpowering all the caramel taste. Although, i must say i quite like the cake part of the cupcake. Moist and fluffy.
Dark Chocolate Ganache and Vanilla Bean. Comparatively less sweet, the dark chocolate cupcake is quite decent but nothing special or memorable. The cake part was okay too. The vanilla bean cupcake was probably the best out of the 4 cupcakes i bought. The icing was okay, not as sweet as the other two. I loved the cake part though. It was also moist and fluffy and the vanilla inside was really fragrant.
Overall:
I would only repurchase the vanilla bean cupcake. The rest, are way too sweet and not memorable enough for me. And, frankly, for all the effort i took to locate the bakery, I would probably not buy it again unless it is really convenient or they have some unique flavor that i really want to try.
